  • Mini Bertie & Chess pot likes...

    • Frequent watering

He likes moist soil, so check him weekly and water whenever the top inch of soil is dry. Let any excess drain off.

    • Humidity

He really really loves humidity. Mist him a couple of times a week or let him live in the bathroom, basking happily in steam.

    • Most light conditions

Like a lot of ferns, he’s used to living in partial shade, so he’s ideal for a room with lower light.

  • In the wild, you’ll find Bertie growing in the dark and damp swamps and forests of South and central America, the West Indies and Africa. This gives you a good idea of the conditions he’s used to, and the care he’ll need in your home. Like most ferns, he loves anything warm, humid and a little shady. It’s no wonder he was such a favourite among Victorians, whose likely damp and poorly lit homes would have been perfect for him.

When caring for Bertie, the main thing to remember is to never let his soil dry out. Water him whenever the top inch of soil feels dry, and keep him in a steamy bathroom or kitchen to help keep his delicate foliage looking fresh. He’s rightly quite proud of his fronds, so please try not to touch them – it might cause them to turn brown.

This bundle includes our statement Chess pot in Brown. The grid print is hand-stamped for an artisanal finish, giving each design a unique look.

When watering your plants, always remove them from the decorative pot first and allow any excess water to drain completely before putting the plant back in the pot. Due to the nature of the material, excess water may escape.
