  • Kim likes...

    • Kim likes Light watering

You can allow Kim to dry out between drinks because it stores water in its leaves. Let it drain after watering and avoid soggy bottoms.

    • Kim likes Bright light

Kim will enjoy a bright spot that gets plenty of light, ideally in an east or west facing window that gets morning or afternoon sun. Protect it from harsh, direct light in summer.

    • Feeding

She barely needs any extra care, not even pruning, but a feed in spring will help her flower more.

  • We love the bright green, textural, needle-shaped leaves of this densely packed little succulent, which makes an unusual addition to any houseplant collection. It’s a massive bonus that it’s easy to look after.

In the wild, Kim can be found in the rocky grassland of Southern Africa where it can grow into a bush up to two metres high and has a thick trunk that holds it upright.

Despite the fact that it's slow growing, when it comes time to repot, either to top up the nutrients or because you want to give your plant a bit more room to grow, be sure to use a really free-draining desert potting mix. It would be equally happy potted up into an arid terrarium, either on its own or in combo with some other succulents – you can mix and match leaf shapes for a really interesting display and even throw in a small rock or two to create a mini landscape.

If you’re lucky, clusters of fragrant tubular yellow flowers may appear from the tips of its stems in summer. For most of the year Kim will enjoy warm temperatures and a sunny spot. It can however tolerate cooler temps down to 10 degrees in winter, as long as it’s not watered.

    Did you know?

In its native Cape Province, the bright yellow flowers of Senecio Barbertonicus are the favoured food of the Painted Lady butterfly and the two depend on each other for survival.
