  • Unlike many cacti, Opuntia are known for their flowers and fruit that decorate the deserts of Mexico but now grow in the similar conditions of African countries like Kenya, Malawi and Tanzania. Though his cousin Carter, Opuntia rubescens ‘Consolea’, grows tall and has that classic cowboy cactus look, Romesh has a shrubbier quality and is affectionately called the Bunny ears cactus because of his typically two-pronged leaf shape. Don’t be fooled into stroking those ‘ears’ though! This cactus is covered in thin barbs, surrounded by white hairy tufts. They detach at the slightest touch and can cause serious skin irritation, so display him out of the way and definitely wear gloves when handling him.

If you’re a collector of cacti and succulents then Romesh is a must, but he’s equally ideal for new plant parents who are looking for something easy-care. He’s really light on watering and will enjoy a sunny spot. If you’re keeping him on a windowsill however, make sure he doesn’t lean up against the glass as the bright light could lead to scorch. Too much water could lead to soft brown patches on your Opuntia’s leaves. Remember, they’re thick and fleshy because they’re already storing most of the water your cactus needs.

    Did you know?

Given they’re desert dwellers, the fine hairs covering the leaves of Opuntia microdasys have cleverly adapted to collect the air moisture found in fog and channel it down to their roots.
