  • Radermachera hainanensis is an evergreen tree native to southern China and Taiwan where it can grow up to 30 metres tall. Its common name, the Golden Jasmine Tree, refers to its yellow, bell-shaped flowers which are lightly fragrant. As a houseplant it's unlikely to flower and is grown more for its glossy green leaves that are divided into delicate leaflets, giving it a full-foliar feel. By growing it in a pot and restricting the size of its root ball it won’t grow much taller than 2 metres and you can limit how tall it grows by pruning it in late winter or early spring.

To keep your Golden Tree Jasmine’s leaves glossy and reduce the likelihood of pests, give it a regular shower with room temperature water and once it’s dry, spritz its leaves with a natural bug control spray. Consider repotting Colin every two-to-three years to top up the nutrients in the potting soil and to give it more room to grow. This is key to keeping your tree happy and healthy.

Remember, Colin grows in warm, wet, tropical conditions in the wild, so as much as possible, try to keep the temperature around your plant even and avoid positioning it in a spot where it will be exposed to hot or cold draughts from aircons or heaters. Increase the humidity around your tree by grouping it together with your other houseplants to create a little microclimate. Displaying your plants together is a great way to create a really lush, jungly feel in your home!
