  • Standing tall, this elegant white flowered orchid is not only striking but scented too, with a sweet lemony fragrance. Being that beautiful requires a bit of TLC. Think of your Dendrobium as the Marilyn Monroe of flowering houseplants

Flowering from around January right through to June, Dendrobium need daytime temps between 18-25 degrees celsius and night time temps above 10 degrees in order to put on their best display. In other words, pop them somewhere warm and water them with room temperature rain water if possible (they’re not fans of hard, cold, limey tap water). A dose of orchid feed with every third watering throughout the growing season will give them everything they need to put on a floral display year after year.

Once they’ve finished flowering, from autumn to spring of the following year, keep them in a bright but cool spot and don’t water. You can start watering again lightly when you see new buds start to form in early spring. It’s a simple care routine really, it just takes a bit of getting used to.

Once your orchid has finished flowering, you can snip off any dead flowers. Don’t cut back the ‘canes’ or thick stems that they grow from unless they’re shrivelled and woody – usually if they’re old. If they’re still green and fleshy it’s highly likely that they’ll produce more flowers over the following years.

    Did you know?

Dendrobium are mostly epiphytic orchids that can be found growing up in the branches of trees. Can you imagine looking up and seeing one of these!
