    • Regular watering

Keep Sean well watered but make sure any excess water drains through so he’s not left sitting soggy.  He won’t enjoy drying out completely so check his soil moisture regularly.

    • Medium light

A warm, draught-free spot with plenty of bright indirect light would be perfect for Sean, who won’t enjoy too much direct sun or deep shade for hours at a time.

    • Feeding

Sean is a fast grower so give him a fortnightly feed over spring and summer to keep the nutrients in his potting soil topped up.

  • We all drink it, but did you know you can grow it too? Well, maybe not to the point that you can harvest berries, dry them into beans and grind your own coffee, but still. It’s pretty cool to have a coffee plant growing at home.

The Coffea arabica plant is native to the high altitude forests of Yemen, Sudan and Ethiopia, where it grows into a tree up to 9 metres tall. It produces masses of white star-shaped flowers which, once pollinated, turn into bright red berries, each with two seeds in.

While your coffee plant is unlikely to flower and produce fruit in the comfort of your home, it will still be hungry, so will need regular feeding and repotting every couple of years. Use a houseplant compost that is free-draining but rich in all the nutrients your plant needs to put on healthy new roots and shoots.

The second thing that’s really important for your coffee plant to thrive is a sufficient amount of humidity. In older homes the humidity should be adequate, although we’d always recommend positioning more tropical plants in steamier spots like the bathroom or kitchen.

    Did you know?

The arabica coffee bean was one of the first cultivated species and to this day, accounts for 60% of the world’s coffee production – talk about standing the test of time!
