Big leaves, low effort – Nicolau might just be the dream plant. He’s a Strelitzia nicolai, commonly known as a Bird of Paradise or Wild Banana plant. Sadly he won’t grow any fruit, but what he lacks in snacks he more than makes up for with his large, paddle-shaped leaves. He’s a real crowd pleaser, and this statement size is ideal for bringing life and flow to open-plan spaces and empty corners.
Nicolau is best suited to bright, sunny workplaces – a south-facing office with lots of natural light would be perfect. Check his soil weekly and give him a drink if it’s looking dry, and add some liquid fertiliser to your watering can every two weeks during spring and summer. Nicolau loves humidity, so we recommend adding a layer of LECA balls to the surface of his soil to lock in moisture, or grouping him with other plants to create a mini microclimate.
