Propagating succulents in a tin

Propagation is the method of growing new plants from existing ones.  It’s a great way to understand your plants better, see them grow and share them with your friends.
All you need to start with is a plant and a vessel to pot up your new succulent. Empty Grind tins work really well for this because you can use the lid to start your succulent’s journey and the tin to pot your succulent  in when it’s slightly bigger.

  1. Start by removing a healthy leaf. Do this by gently holding it and slowly twisting until it comes off cleanly from the stem.
  2. Now you need to leave your leaf for a couple of days to develop a callus over the cut edge.
  3. After a couple of days you can gently lay the leaf (cut edge down) on a tray of potting soil.his is where the tin lid comes in handy.
  4. Place your leaf/leaves somewhere warm, with indirect light and make sure the rooting medium remains moist by misting whenever it feels dry.
  5. It will take a few weeks, or even a couple of months, to see your new micro plants forming, but once you see roots you can cover them with a bit of soil to keep the growth going.
  6. Once your micro succulents reach a certain size (usually when they start to touch), it’s time to repot.

Top tip: Wait until spring and summer to probate your succulent. These warmer months are the best times to propagate, as your plant is likely to be in its active growing period.
