About hydroponic plants

Lots of different types of plants can be grown in water, but we've chosen Sia and Wallace as our hydroponic plants. This method of growing is known as hydroponic planting, which means growing without soil. Your plant will just suck up all the water it needs. You’ve probably read our guidance saying plants don’t like their roots too wet, but that only applies to plants growing in soil. Bacteria breed quickly in very wet soil. That bacteria can attack your plant’s roots and make them rot. Because there’s no soil here, bacteria can’t breed and your plant is perfectly happy with wet roots.

A guide to hydroponic plants

What are hydroponic houseplants and why should I choose them?

Hydroponic houseplants are a great way to bring greenery and life into your home. Unlike traditional soil-based plants, hydroponic plants grow in a nutrient-rich water solution. This allows them to receive all the nutrients they need to thrive without the need for soil. Hydroponic plants are easy to care for and require less maintenance than soil-based plants.

How do I take care of hydroponic houseplants?

It is important to understand the basics of hydroponic houseplant care to keep your plants stay healthy and vibrant:

  • Keep your hydroponic plant in a bright room but out of direct sunlight
  • Change the water every two weeks and make sure the roots are dangling in it, but not fully submerged
  • Give a nutrient boost with a little liquid fertiliser in spring and summer

How do I assemble my hydroponic plant?

Assembling your hydroponic plant is easy, just make sure you put it together as soon as it arrives.

  1. Take everything out of the glass bowl.
  2. Fill the glass bowl with enough water to cover most of the roots, but leaving about two inches clear at the top.
  3. Place the plant in the bowl, making sure the top of the roots are out of the water and they have enough space to breathe.
  4. Add the two cork halves around the stem of the plant and secure it in place.
  5. Change the water every two weeks.

How do you maintain hydroponic house plants?

Hydroponic house plants are easy to look after once you know the basics. Since they grow in water, not soil, there’s no need for traditional watering. Just change the water every two weeks to keep things fresh, and make sure the roots are dipping into it (but not completely submerged). Top it up if the water level drops. In spring and summer, add a little liquid fertiliser to help them grow strong and healthy.
