About Nicolau

Like his brother Reggie, Nicolau hails from the coast of South Africa, where he likes to chill out by the sea and bask in the ocean breeze. He gets his nickname, 'Wild Banana', from his large, banana-shaped leaves that sit on top of long stems - almost like he's wearing a very elaborate hat. We love him for his amazing exotic shape, which can give your space a bit of tropical-cool.

How to care for Nicolau (Strelitzia Nicolai)

The man loves the sun - make sure you put him in a brightly-lit spot where he can bask in the rays. A south-facing window is best for this.

Keep his soil slightly moist during the spring and summer, watering him every week or so. In the winter and autumn, let the top few inches of his soil dry out between showers.

Nicolau thrives in a humid environment -- check out our Care Guide for tips on how to increase humidity levels in his environment.

If you can, put Nicolau outside during the hot summer months so he can feel the cool breeze between his leaves.

Nicolau doesn't love the cold, so make sure he's in temperatures above 10 degrees.
