Alstromeria, also known as Peruvian lily, is very popular as a cut flower. You’ve probably seen it sold in bunches in your local florist or supermarket. It’s very easy to grow your own and treat yourself to flowers from early summer to mid-autumn.
Native to South America, hence the alternative name, it likes conditions that are both sunny and moist. Put it in the brightest spot you have and keep it regularly watered, so the soil is moist but not soggy. It will reward you with masses of bright flowers.
In winter, its best to move its pot to somewhere sheltered from the rain. It won’t like its soil flooded, which can cause its roots to rot. In early spring, you can divide a mature plant into several smaller plants, giving yourself even more flowers.
