About Curtis

With his family name meaning 'cultivated' Curtis is one chilled guy, and putting him in your garden will make you cool as a cucumber too. Originating from India, Curtis' family have been around for some 3,000 years, and have been making salads, sandwiches and raitas crunchier and more refreshing ever since. Put him in your water or on your eyes for a little zen time, or pickle him and pop him in a chutney. This guy is made of 90% water, so he's a pretty good way to stay hydrated too.

He loves hanging out in the sun, and his fruit will be ready for harvesting in the warmest months - so get those pickle jars ready and reap the benefits all year long.

How to care for Curtis

The basics

This guy loves the heat, so choose him a sunny spot in the garden and he'll be happy. Try to keep him sheltered from the wind too.

Make sure he has enough room to spread out - his roots grow a lot, and being a climber, he likes to stretch his legs.

Make sure he gets lots of water, especially in the summer. When his leaves start to droop, that means he's thirsty.

In colder months, cover him up under a tarp, plastic sheet, or upside down plastic container (you can weigh them down with stones or pegs) so he doesn't freeze. If he's in a pot, bring him inside or move him to a place that's sheltered from the frosty wind.

Going the extra mile

Prune away any leaves that are covering the fruit - the more sun he gets, the juicier the cucumbers will be.

Give him plenty of compost and fertiliser and you'll be rewarded with fast-growing, succulent cucumbers. Our multi-purpose compost should do the trick.

Help him stay upright as he gets bigger, by attaching him to a larger trellis, fence or support.
