About Barbara

Barbara the prickly pear is native to American deserts, but as an indoor cactus she's really easy to care for and looks super impressive.

If you're very lucky, she may fruit with the prickly pears that inspired her popular name. These fruits are edible if a little unusual so go ahead and try them, here at Patch the closest we can get to describing them is "somewhere between betroot and pomegranate".

Since she's covered in spines she isn't recommended for rooms where small children might find her.

Barbara the prickly pear likes...

Lots of sun
As a cactus, she'll drink up sunshine. Near a window in a south or west facing room is perfect.

Infrequent watering
From spring to summer, water her whenever her soil feels almost dry. In winter, once or twice a month will be fine.

Prickly pear can tolerate temperatures from 12-24 C in the summer but not less than 4 C in the winter

Top tip
A good dose of cactus-specific feed once a month between spring and late summer will help her grow quickly.
